Issues in Fisheries Management

First time here? Read the Introduction below.

Current Issues

  • Save the Summer Flounder Fishery Fund - Despite being at the highest levels ever recorded and having seen a stock size increase of 400% in the past 15 years, the Government continues to tighten Summer Flounder regulations. Summer flounder are not in trouble, we the fishermen are! The SSFFF was formed to fund the science and support the legislative efforts to prevent this modern day tragedy. [Visit Website]
  • NJ Reef Rescue Seeks to Ban Fixed Gear From Artificial Reefs - Tired of getting snagged on high flyers and trap lines while fishing the Artificial Reefs to which you donated money? NJ Reef Rescue needs your help! [Visit Website]

Introduction

Since my first days of wetting a fishing line, fishing effort has increased dramatically. Gone are the days of filling the back of a pick-up with bluefish, coolers with fluke and a virtual unlimited harvest of blackfish and sea bass. With improved navigational and fish finding equipment, along with boats on the market for every budget, fishing effort has reached unprecedented heights. We've seen severe declines in catches of a number of species, but thanks to fisheries management efforts, a number of those stocks have rebounded. There's a long way to go, but the road to the future is clear - we must conserve stocks for ourselves and future generations.

In the interests of my business, my own fishing success, and the success of the generations that will follow, I have taken the time to become familiar with the management process, provide my input on fisheries management decisions when the opportunities arise, and work to educate my customers and recreational angling public on the issues before us. I have established this page to help keep you abreast of the issues with which we are faced, and will offer suggestions on how you can take part in shaping the future of our fisheries. If you haven't already done so, I strongly urge you to read the Fisheries Management Primer I previously authored. There are more complete works on the subject, but I have tried to pare the process and players down to that which most directly impacts us as recreational fishermen and women.
